Hello everyone! This is the final week of term before the Summer holidays, so it is your last week in Year 3! It is very sad that we have not all been in school for all this time and I have missed you all so much, but I have loved seeing your videos, pictures and work on Tapestry. I am incredibly proud of you all. Well done 😃💕
I am so looking forward to seeing you all again in September, when you will be Year 4s! We will have some time together when you come back, so we will finally be able to do all those raffles!!! 😃😃😃
Before then, I am excited to say you are all invited to a Year 3 ZOOM Meeting next Thursday at 11am. It would be lovely if you could all join us. Login details will be sent out via Tapestry early next week. At the meeting, you may wish to say or show a message to all your friends, show us something you have done during Lockdown, tell us something funny that has happened or just smile and wave. It’s up to you! 😊😊😊
For the final week, we have arranged lots of fun activities for each day. You may wish to choose from our ideas, rearrange everything to suit you, or create your own special days. The aim is to reward you all for your hard work and to recognize that you have missed out on all the summer fun we normally have, such as sports day, summer fair and the disco.

Maths: Digital Time – Telling the time to 5 minutes.
For today’s work you need a clock face with movable hands. If you do not have one, you can make one using the following template. It is best printed off and stuck on card to give it more strength.
Last week you learnt how to tell the time on an analogue clock. Today you are going to look at digital time and the equivalent analogue time. Work slowly and carefully through the following PowerPoint with an adult if you can, up to and including Slide 28. This is the slide before the one with the title: The School Day. Use your clock to help you answer the questions on the screen. There are some quite tricky parts, so if you do not understand something, stop, go back and have another go, discussing anything you don’t understand with your adult. Do not worry if you don’t get to slide 28 today. There will be more time to continue this tomorrow.

Feeling that we ‘belong’ is very important to all of us. It makes us feel valued and secure. For example, we all belong to Buckstones Primary School. English: Poetry – My Shadow
Here is a well-known poem called My Shadow, which was written by Robert Louis Stevenson (the same person who wrote Treasure Island!). Read it out loud several times and discuss it with an adult. It is quite an old poem (written in 1885), so some of the language may seem a little unfamiliar to you.
The poem is about a child who is fascinated by their own shadow. Once you are familiar with the poem, answer the 1 or 2 star comprehension questions. You should be able to use your scientific knowledge about shadows to help with some of these. Some of the questions ask about ‘rhyming couplets’. These are simply two lines that go together and rhyme. Once you have finished, check your answers with the relevant answer sheet.

Read the following PowerPoint to find out more about Christian churches.
One of the slides shows stained glass windows. After you have finished reading, have some fun creating your own stained glass window design. It does not have to be on a religious theme, but it should be based on something important or interesting to you. Have a look at the examples below to give you some ideas. You can create it on the template or make your own.
Draw your design today and then tomorrow afternoon you can colour it using any media you wish, such as pencil crayon, felt tip, paint or coloured card. Think carefully about your design before you start and take as much care as you can when drawing.

Topic – Famous Pirates
Over the next two afternoons, I would like you to research famous pirates (real and fictional) and design a fact-file, leaflet or poster to show your information. Today is all about research. Tomorrow you can present your findings.

English: Opposites Poems
Read the following poem called Mary and Sarah. It is about two girls who like opposite things.
1) Read through the poem with an adult and discuss any words you are not familiar with (there are quite a few unfamiliar words and phrases in this poem).
2) Read the poem again with your adult, but this time one of you should say all the lines about Mary, and the other one say all the lines about Sarah. Both of you should say the last verse together. Practise this a few times until you can say the poem fluently between you, adding expression where you think it is needed.
3) Next, underline all the smooth things that Mary likes in one colour, and all the rough things that Sarah likes in another colour. How many different things has the writer included in the poem? If you can’t print the poem, write the items in your book as two lists, under the headings ‘Smooth’ and ‘Rough’.
Tomorrow you will be looking at another Opposites poem and later in the week you will be collecting ideas for an Opposites poem of your own.

English: Opposites Poems
The following poem is similar to Mary and Sarah, but this one it is called Mike and Dave. Mike likes wet things and Dave likes dry things.
1) In this poem, the last word of each verse is missing, so your first task is to work out what the missing words could be. Think about which lines rhyme, then decide what wet or dry things could fit.
2) Once you have decided what the missing words could be, add them to the poem and practise reading the poem with rhythm and expression. You could share the poem with a partner, like you did yesterday.
3) Tomorrow, I shall give you a writing frame to help you write an opposites poem of your own. Today, I would like you to think of two opposites, e.g. black/white; big/small; hot/cold etc…, then use the sheet below, or your book, to list as many things as you can for each of your opposites. The more things you can think of, the easier it will be to write the poem.

You should now be getting the idea of column subtraction, so here are some further questions to help you become super confident. Do questions 1 – 10. Use the poster from yesterday if you need a little reminder of how to do it.

English: Write first draft of an Opposites Poem
You will need the list of opposites you collected yesterday and the poem Mike and Dave.
The poetry planning sheet follows exactly the layout of Mike and Dave. You need to choose two names for your poem, then use your opposites ideas to fit the writing frame. Your poem does NOT need to rhyme.
You will need a mixture of single words and longer phrases. Keep looking back at Mike and Dave to help you think of and write similar ideas, line by line. Remember this is your first draft, so you can change your mind, rub out and rewrite as often as you like. Once you have completed it, read it out loud to check that you are happy with it. Punctuate it, following the punctuation in Mike and Dave. Tomorrow, you can write your final version.

English: Opposites Poem Final Version.
Today, I would like you to check your Opposites Poem from yesterday. Pay particular attention to spelling and punctuation. Change anything you need to on your first draft.
When you are completely happy with it, you need to produce the final version. This could be in your book or on a piece of paper, written in your neatest handwriting; or you may choose to do it on the computer. Make sure you set it out correctly, exactly like it is in Mike and Dave. Take your time to make your poem as perfect as you can make it.
Remember to send your finished version in via Tapestry if you wish. I would love to read them!

Topic: The Story of Treasure Island
For the next two afternoons, I would like you to listen to the story of Treasure Island, a famous pirate adventure story written in 1881 by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is a BBC animation for children, split into ten short video episodes. Today, read episodes 1-5 and tomorrow read episodes 6-10. At the end of each episode, discuss the characters and the plot of the story with an adult. A good idea is to act out small sections, so that you begin to understand who everyone in the story is and what exactly is going on. Later this week, you will be writing your own pirate adventure story, so you can use ideas from this story to help. Most importantly, just enjoy it!

English: Plan a Pirate Adventure Story.
Today you are going to plan your own pirate adventure story, using the Pirate Treasure Map that you made last week, so make sure you have it with you while you are planning. You can use lots of ideas from the story of Treasure Island for your characters and for the plot, together with ideas of your own. You may use the story opener below to help you get going if you wish, and there is a pirate adventure story mat with pictures and vocabulary.
The main idea should be that someone is looking for treasure on your island and pirates are involved. Remember it is an exciting adventure, so there should be problems for your characters to overcome.
Use the planning sheet to jot down the basic outline of your story, or if you prefer you may draw a storyboard. Talk it through with an adult so you are clear who your characters are and what the plot is going to be. Remember to include the pirate character you described last week!

Science: Looking for patterns in how shadows change.
Watch the following PowerPoint, which explains some of the things you found out last week when you experimented with changing the size, shape and direction of shadows.

Now watch the following animation from the Children’s University of Manchester (Flash Player is required for this). This explains what happens to the shadow of a stick during the course of the day as the sun seems to move across the sky (the sun actually stays still; it is the earth that moves). It is interactive, so follow the instructions to measure the length of the shadow at different times in the day and enter the data in the chart onscreen. Do you notice any patterns? At the end of the animation, explain to an adult what you have found out.

Today you are going to use your plan, your treasure map and your pirate description to help you write an exciting pirate adventure story. Remember to use powerful vocabulary throughout. Think about the reader of your story as you are writing. Will they feel interested, scared and excited?

English: Meet the Pirates
This is a matching activity. You need to read clues very carefully to match up pirate pictures with the name and explanation of their role on board ship.
The first thing you need to do is read the information at the bottom of the ‘Who’s Who’ sheet under the heading ‘How to recognise the crew members’, then match up the job of each pirate by looking very closely at the pictures on the picture sheet. Write the job of each pirate under the dotted lines. Next, put the picture card number in the correct boxes on the ‘Who’s Who’ sheet and read the information to find out more about each pirate job. You may colour the pictures in if you wish.

Science: How Shadows Can Change.
Watch the following video to remind you how shadows are formed, then I would like you to experiment with a torch and a simple object, such as a pencil, scissors or a shape made from Lego or other construction equipment, to see if you can make the shadow change its size, its direction and its shape. Record what you do in pictures and writing on a sheet like the one below. Think carefully about the position of the torch in relation to the object and the shadow. English: Collecting Vocabulary for a Pirate Description.
Tomorrow, you are going to be writing a description of a vicious and evil pirate (either from a picture or from your own imagination)! Today, I would like you to spend some time looking at the following Pirate Descriptosaurus. It is full of wonderful vocabulary and phrases to help you write an amazing description. Take lots of time today to read and discuss all the vocabulary with an adult if you can. Then, choose words and phrases from each section of the descriptosaurus that you think will help you write a great description of the worst pirate you could imagine, and put them in the boxes on the Planning Sheet. Add some of your own if you wish. I have added a few pirate pictures for you to look at to help you choose the best vocabulary.

Spelling Practice: Keep using lots of different strategies to practise your spellings.
English: Write a Pirate Description.
Time to unleash your pirate on the world! Choose one of the pirate pictures from yesterday’s work or use your own idea of a pirate to write an amazing description, using the vocabulary you collected yesterday. Think about someone reading your description. Try to make them feel terrified of your pirate by choosing and using the most powerful words and phrases you can to write descriptive sentences. It’s all about the impact on the reader!
Start your sentences in different ways; don’t start every sentence with ‘He’. Instead, try using:
- prepositions, such as: underneath, on top of, behind, beside, in front of.
- -ing words and phrases, such as: hanging from his beard…, cascading from his head…, glinting menacingly in the sun…
You may write your description in your book or on one of the following pirate themed pages:

Maths: Treasure Island Grid Reference Task
Look carefully at the Treasure Island map. For question 1, draw each symbol in the correct position on the map, using the grid references. For question 2, find the treasure by following the directions very carefully. The start position is the middle of Dead Man’s Beach, which has the grid reference I7. It is important to do each part of this slowly and carefully because if you go wrong, you will have to go back to the start!

For the next two afternoons, I would like you to plan and draw a detailed Treasure Island Map that will form the setting of a Pirate Adventure Story next week. Today, I would like you to look at examples of treasure maps very, very carefully and use the features you can see to begin to draw your own Treasure Island on squared paper. Use as many details as you can from the examples. Really take your time so you produce a beautiful finished product. Make sure you have a compass somewhere on your map, as well as a title. The more interesting you make your map, the easier your story planning will be. If you like, before you start to draw, you may wish to make your map look old and brown by dabbing the paper with a cold tea bag.

Science: How Shadows Are Formed.
Look at the following PowerPoint carefully and answer any questions by pointing to the correct position on the screen. Then, I would like you to have some fun noticing and creating shadows of your own. Hopefully, it will be sunny so you can go outside with an adult and record the shadows you can see or make. You can use string, wool or chalk (but only if mums and dads say it’s OK!) to show the shape of the shadows. Try making some shadows of yourself in different shapes. Draw the shadows you see on a piece of paper, or take a photo of them to put on the computer. If it is not sunny, try making shadows with a torch in a darkened room. Notice each time, where the shadow is in relation to the object and the light source.
IMPORTANT: NEVER look directly at a light source, especially the sun. It can damage your eyes.

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and different meanings. It is very important to use the correct spelling when you are writing so that the reader is not confused. Use a dictionary to find the meaning of each homophone. Learning the meaning as well as the spelling is very important this week.
Maths: Fractions of Objects
For this lesson you will need to use small objects to ‘act out’ the calculations. You could use counters, buttons, beads, shells or any other small objects you have at home.
Follow the PowerPoint below slowly and carefully, using your small objects to copy the actions on each slide. There are some fraction sharing grids to print off or you could just draw some on a piece of paper. You do not need to write anything in your book today. The important thing is that you understand the link between calculating fractions of numbers and division. The colouring slide at the end is tomorrow’s work!

The activity below has three types of cards: a fraction calculation, a division calculation and a whole number answer. Your job is to match the cards up in 3s. For example 1/3 of 12, 12 divided by 3 and the number card 4 will all go together because they all give the same answer. You can cut the cards out and stick them in 3s on a big sheet of paper (or several smaller ones), or you can write them in your book.

Art: Drawing Fossils
This afternoon, I would like you to have a go at sketching one or more fossils in as much detail as you can. Watch the first 8-10 minutes of the video below. It shows you exactly how to draw an ammonite. You could then watch it again, pausing the video every few seconds to copy what the artist is doing. You do not need to draw the whole thing; just the shell part is sufficient. Once you have done that, you might want to have a go at drawing some of your own fossils or the ones on the pictures below. Remember, look very closely all the time and sketch lightly with a pencil so you can rub out easily if you need to.

Maths: Division with Remainders (revision)
Choose the 1, 2 or 3 star question sheets. Read the problems carefully and answer the questions. Act out the problems or draw pictures if it helps.
Use your times tables to work out the answer, e.g. How many 5s in 19? Say the 5 times table to get as close to 19 as you can without going over it (“One 5 is 5, two 5s are 10, 3 fives are 15″), then calculate the remainder by counting from 15 up to 19 (4). So the answer is 3 remainder 4 (3 with 4 left over).

Write a sentence for each of this week’s spelling words. Remember to include adventurous vocabulary, different openers, different sentence types (e.g. questions, exclamations), direct speech, conjunctions, adverbs etc… in order to make your sentences varied and interesting.
Remember, do not start your sentences with ‘I’ or ‘My’.

I would like you to spend the next three afternoons on the project you started last Friday, when you read all about great rivers of the world. I would like you to choose at least three world rivers and create an information text of your choice about them. Ideas could include:
An information booklet with one page per river
A big poster with different sections for each river
A fact-file with a page per river
or any other idea that you wish to do.
The important thing is to make your work informative, eye-catching and colourful. If you can print out some pictures, so much the better. You can get lots of information and ideas about layout from all the links below. I would love to see your creations, so remember to send pictures in on Tapestry.

Remind yourself how to use this method of division by working your way through the following powerpoint presentations. They guide you through the method step by step, by asking a question at each stage. Answer each question as you go through the slides (you do not have to write anything down at this point). The first powerpoint starts off with 2-digit numbers and the second one progresses to 3-digit numbers.

Maths: Division Problems (2-step, with or without remainders).
Try the following word problems. They each have two steps, which means you might have to add or subtract something before you do the division part. Read each problem carefully two or three times so you understand it. Acting it out often helps. Calculate the answer to the first part of the problem before you do the second part. Show both calculations in your book. Make your answer very clear. Remember to use the bus stop method of division.
If you have time today (or any other day!) play the game below. It’s lots of fun and the more you play it, the better you will be at division with remainders.

Please read the poem, The Owl and The Pussycat and answer the questions. Read it several times until you are really familiar with it before starting the questions. There are two ways you can do this comprehension:
- Answer all the questions in the booklet, then check the answers using the powerpoint or the mark scheme below.
- Answer one question at a time, using the helpful hints on the powerpoint. To start the new Science topic on Rocks, I would like you to look at the Lesson Presentation below up to Slide 12. (Remember to click on ‘Enable Editing’, ‘Slide Show’, and ‘From Beginning’). It takes a minute or two to open. You will be using the information on the rest of the Presentation next week.
Answer the questions at the start, either by discussing them with an adult or writing your ideas in your book.
After that, spot the rocks in each of the slides. Stop at Slide 12 (the one showing a pebble beach).
I would then like you to do a Rock Survey in and around your house, using a table like the one below. You can look from your window or your garden, and record in drawings and writing wherever you can see rocks. This includes man-made rocks such as bricks, tarmac, stone flags etc.. as well as natural rocks. Draw and write as carefully and neatly as you can.

Reading: Choose a book of your own to read for 20 minutes.
History: Complete the picture you drew yesterday by colouring it, using any media you wish, e.g. pencil crayons, felt tips, paint, pastels or collage. Have lots of fun!

Spellings: Ask a parent to test you on this week’s words. (Parents, we normally test the words out of order). Do the test at the back of your Spelling book.
Maths: Emoji code breaking.
Use the code to add and subtract 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Please do the first two sheets. Look carefully at the example to see how it works. You should use column addition or subtraction to calculate the answers. Check your work with the answer sheets, but no peeping at the answers first!
